Long over due, but work has begun to refurbish the Barbecue Grill Pavilion. With donated funds and labor the work is moving at a steady pace. If you haven't noticed, the nasty old willow is finally gone. A new 22' x 34' concrete pad has been poured, Steel roof, ceiling and soffet, have been installed over existing frame next step is to remove old cracked concrete pad, move the grill and rebuild its base for easier use, finish concrete floor work. Then install a frame and roof over the new pad. Thanks to all who have contributed to this project. With the weather forecast all week long leading up to the weekend of June 12 and 13 calling for rain and thunderstorms everyone was prepared to get wet. But, NOT ONE DROP fell during the 37th Annual 36 Hole Event, sunny and mid 70's prevailed along with excellent scoring conditions. The young guns (pictured) of Evan Aamodt and Scott Schuitema won with a score 63-64=127. Two time defending champions Ken Taylor and Brad VanDam had their struggles on Sunday after being in second after day one only two shots back, finishing 65-72=137 in 5th place. The individual round of the weekend went to Ryan Mouw shooting 65 on his own ball Sunday to help his partner Lane White win the first flight 72-62=134.

There was some incredible golf shots both days, but on Saturday hole #3 saw two Eagle 2's on the 314 yard par 4 hole. First Cris Gotaas knocks in a 101 yard 9 iron from the left rough. Playing in the same foursome Brad VanDam on the very next swing of the group knocks in a lob wedge from 75 yards out of the right rough. The odds of two shots back to back going in from that distance is unknown to this PGA Golf Professional, but it is high.

For the second year in a row Todd Simms made a Hole In One during the Joe Foster Open Tournament here at Oceana Golf Club. He Aced hole #6 using a 7 iron. The hole was playing 180 yards.

Annual Meeting Brings Forth New Board Members

Bob Blackmer said good-bye to the Board Of Directors at Oceana Golf Club after serving 18 years. The Club Treasurer will be missed in that capacity but promises to still be highly visible at the golf course in a volunteer status. Congratulations to New Board Members Bill Shriver of New Era and Gene Herrygers of Hart. Other Directors are Rich Lindenau, Frank Schramm, and Tom Kirk. Tom Kirk stepped down at President and Rich Granger was elected into that position. VP remains the same with Doug Raeth, Barb Altland was elected Secretary, Rich Tompkins is the new Treasurer.

Mason Beckman Ace's #17 And Makes History

Congratulations to Mason Beckman on scoring an Ace on Hole #17, using a 7 iron from 164 yards. It occurred during a West Michigan Conference High School Jamboree hosted by his team, Shelby, on May 8th. It was the FIRST Hole-In-One in 10 years during a Jamboree. It was also a First for a Shelby High School golfer ever.The Shelby Senior was also medalist for the 36 player event shooting 80 on his home course.

18th Annual Great Pumpkin Open, Oceana Golf Club

With the temperatures in the Low 50’s, and plenty of sunshine, no to very little wind, the Great Pumpkin was prime to be had. The course was set for a Five and one half hour round for the 37 two-person teams. There was a little bit of everything for everyone. Long holes short holes, but one thing was consistent, chipping and putting are key here at Oceana. The scores ranged from (66) by the Champions Marc Inglis and Lance Gosselin up to 143 for the eighteen-hole layout. The golf course is set up in a cross-country style layout, with different requirements once the players are on the green. The first nine holes are played in a two-person scramble and the second nine holes are alternate shot. Par for the course is 66. The following is a list of the finishers with pay places highlighted in BOLD. Matching scorecards broke all ties.

Aeration Process

Starting October 5th we will be aerating the Back 9 greens. Last week the Front 9 was completed with plugs being removed, heavy top dressing of sand, dragged and rolled. The same will be done and complete Monday, weather permitting. The tees, and fairways have been completed already.

Bonine pictured here recently passed away, and his friends and family from here and afar attended a party in his memory. After 4 straight years of holding the championship trophy, Team Oceana had to turn it over to Golden Sands. The weather was absoultley perfect, but nothing beats the meal put on by Joanne Clark. Stewart Roche Hole In One

Congratulations to Mr. Stewart Roche. At the age of 93 able to do only what a select few have ever done. Sept. 2, 2009, he scored a hole in one on #12 using a 4 iron. Witnessed by Frank Harmon of Spring Lake Mr. Roche says he thinks this is about his 8th career hole in one. Believe it or not it is not his first since turning 90, he accomplished the feat at the age of 91 at Golden Sands in Mears. Interestingly enough Mr. Roche it is not the first time he has aced the 12th hole at Oceana, exact date of previous was unknown. Way to Go, Mr. Roche gives us all hope.

OCCOA Glo Ball Champs

The Oceana County Council On Aging held their Glo Ball Event Friday Aug. 21st with a 9:00 PM Shotgun start. With sixteen teams competing and enjoying the cool, misty rain, the food was great the fun was there to be had. The winning team of Don Anderson, Ross Finlan, Laura Ritchie and Husband Chris Ritchie took home the title with a two under par 35 on the back nine at Oceana Golf Club. Look to get them next year and a great big thanks to Stephanie Moore, Executive Director of OCCOA for putting this all together.

Todd Simms Hole In One

Todd Simms scored his first career Hole In One on the second day of the Foster Open. He was playing in the same foursome as Jim McCamant who accomplished the same feat the day before. Simms made his history making shot on #8 using an 8 iron. Only moments before his partner Mark McCamant scored an eagle 2 on the 7th hole, not a bad looking team scorecard for those two holes. Congratulations to Todd.

Congratulations to the three members elected to the Oceana Golf Club Board Of Directors. At the Annual Meeting of The Membership the vote was tallied with both incumbents Rich Tompkins and Doug Raeth retaining their seat for another three (3) years, along with Frank Schramm winning the third seat. Congratulations to them and a special Thank You to Gary Babinec for his nine (9) years on the Board and last five as President.

2009 Rotary Scramble Results

The weather was almost perfect for the 24th Annual Shelby Rotary Club 4 Person Scramble. The event was held May 2nd and 3rd. Champions pictured are Jim Boals, Tim Genson, Tom Leafstrand, Don Leafstrand firing 56-59=115 total. They were followed by Kyle Klotz, Corey Parmalee, Mike DeRuiter, Justin Wilson at 119, Fred Sanford, Craig Deiters, Erik Sanford, Dave Nelson 120.

First Flight Winners were Jason Freiheit, Bracken Netcott, Lance Hodges, Jordan Gosselin 64-59=123. Mark DeVries, Lance Gosselin, Scott Kriesel, Tony Augustyn 124, Larry Chapman, Steve Allard, Tom Hinman, Ben Glendening 125.

Second Flight Winners were Dick DeBruin, Dave DeBruin, Duane Keith, John Nousain 68-63=131. Followed by tom Pruim, Bill Daugherty, Jeff Timmins, Keith Brott 132, Ty French, Jeff Johnson, Brian Mathis, Doug Bryant 134

Rotary Scramble First Day Results

After a brief Frost delay, and a calm morning, the wind picked up and the sun shone brightly all day, the results for the first day are in. Winners of the four closest to the pin holes were on #6 Josh Doerr, #8 Paul Senecal, #12 John Arnoldi, #17 Joe Firestone. The Flight breakdown was a little more difficult to decide, but after a long discussion between Fred Sanford Rotary Tournament Chairman and Marc Inglis Oceana Golf Club PGA Professional, it came about. The Championship Flight leaders (56 to 62), of Tom Leafstrand, Tim Genson, Jim Boals, Don Leafstrand shooting 17 under par 56 set a pace only to be awed at. The First Flight, (63 to 66), leaders has two teams at 63 has 20 teams total. Second Flight (67 to 76) has 24 teams. Sunday Day two starts at 7:45 am.

General sign up begins for our Best Ball Event, The Joe Foster Open, May 1.

Upcoming Saturday and Sunday, May 2nd-3rd, The 26th Annual Shelby Rotary Club Four Person Scramble. Open play will start about 5:00 pm both days.

May 8th @ 12:30 is the Corporate Cup Adventure, this is a four person scramble with loads of fun, great idea to treat some employees with a Friday afternoon off. Get your teams together quickly. Call for open tee times or to sign up a team.

May 14th is the Annual Meeting Of The Membership at the clubhouse starting at 7:30 pm.

May 21st, MHSAA Golf District 22 Division 3, Shelby High School host School. Open tee times start about 3:00 pm.

May 22nd, Rain Date for previous event. When calling for tee times, be sure to leave a number we can reach you if this date is utilized by the MHSAA, in order to reschedule. Dollar day's will continue .....

May 23rd Oceana Golf Club Member/Guest & Skins Game kick-off weekend 10am-noon.

Hole In One - First Of 2009

Paul Lewis scored the first hole in one at Oceana in the 2009 season. He made his ace on hole #8 using a 7 iron. The yardage for Paul was 147 yards on April 16, 2009. Congratulations Paul!!!

Aerification Under Way

Well the cores are extracted and next the topdressing sand will be applied and fertilizer down to help in a speedy recovery. A nice thunderstorm along with some warm weather wouldn't hurt a bit either. The forecast is for rain on Tuesday April 14th, and starting Wednesday the 15th some much warmer weather up near and into the 60's. Soon the grass will be growing filling in any signs Old Man Winter may have left behind, and get the buds to pop out on all the beautiful trees lining the fairways of Oceana Golf Club. Let the leagues begin, handicaps drop, and the course record be in jeopardy. Good Luck and Good Golfing in 2009.

Just a preview of our Summer rates to stimulate your golf juices. Monday thru Thursday 18 holes with cart is $25 .00 per person. Saturday and Sunday $29.00. Starting May 15th, Fridays will be DOLLAR DAYS!!! Only $1.00 per hole including cart, also dollar beers, soda, hot dogs, snacks and other dollar specials. This Friday special will run to the end of June, AT LEAST. Call now to start booking your tee times they will fill up.

Green Aeriation

Hello Golfers,
This Spring weather has set the maintenance of the course back a little. One of the necessary evils of the business is the need to Aerate the greens and for that matter as much of the golf course as possible. We try to get the greens done A.S.A.P. and that has not happened yet. One of the key parts to getting it started is ground temperature. The soil must be 47-50 degrees for the plant to not suffer too much shock. We are hoping to be near that soon. The process will take about two days with nine holes being closed each day. That will give the crew time to plug and clean the greens. Then the topdressing will be laid down along with fertilizer for the plant to help in recovery. Approximately one week later a second layer of topdressing sand will be applied to fill in any remaining holes and to top off the first application of topdressing.

The annual Shelby Rotary Club Scramble is open to any golfers, played in the regular scramble format, entry fee is $80.00 per person. This two day event is May 2nd, and May 3rd, pick your own tee time with it being the same for both days. Call the golf shop 231-861-4211 or email us oceanagolfclub@gmail.com to book your time today, Hurry because the times fill up fast. Also the 27 HOLE CHALLENGE is coming up even sooner April 25th. This is a 27 hole two person team event with each nine being played in a different format. The first nine is best ball, second nine played as a two person scramble, and the third nine is true alternate shot. Call for more details and to sign up. Volunteer help needed

Oceana Golf Club is looking for anyone interested in volunteering some time at the golf club. The list of items that need some TLC are but not limited to; Tree trimming, raking, brush cleanup, edging, flowerbed maintenance, general cleanup, painting, carpentry and fixer upper items. Anyone interested in helping in such a way can contact the golf course at 231-861-4211. Board member Tom Kirk will be heading up the assignment of duties so please call and leave a name, number and area of interest.
